For TRA to assist you if you lost your motor vehicle registration card, you must register all the motor vehicles that you own, so that they can identify how they can assist you.

If you lose your Motor vehicle registration card, follow these steps:

  • An advertisement to be published in a newspaper concerning the loss of a motor vehicle registration card with the MV registration number and the location of the loss.
  • To apply for a duplicate motor vehicle registration card, write to the TRA Regional Manager.

Attach the following documents to the form MV 40:

  • A photocopy of the newspaper advertisement
  • Report on police losses 
  • Report of motor vehicle inspection

  • A true copy of an identity card, such as a driving license, voter’s registration card, national identification card, or passport.
  • Bring an affidavit verifying ownership of the motor vehicle registration number.
  • It is necessary to bring the motor vehicle to the TRA office for verification by an officer of the TRA
  • A recent passport-sized photograph of the owner
  • Mobile phone number of the owner
  • A copy of the lost motor vehicle card

TRA will notify the owner and require TSH. 50,000 for the duplicate motor vehicle registration card if it does not receive any objection within 30 days of the advertisement in a newspaper.
